Campervan Checklist

Packing For Your Road Trip

It’s always a good idea to plan and have your “Road Trip Pack List” finalised well before your adventure starts. Whether you’re going to be on the road for a weekend or a month, you want to be well prepared to ensure a smooth transition into van life. Having to buy a rain jacket or Bluetooth speaker when you already have these things at home is a real Debbie Downer to start a trip.

We’ve put together a camper van checklist to help you pack efficiently and set off on your getaway on wheels with confidence!

We’ve broken up our van packing lists into 5 categories, to reduce any stress and help you customise your own list:

  • Camping essentials
  • Groceries
  • Campervan maintenance checklist
  • Camping with pet’s checklist
  • Off-grid camping

Camping and Campervanning Essentials

If you get one checklist list right, let it be this one. These basics will keep you safe and well so you can enjoy your road trip even more! But before you rush out to buy these things, read the description of what comes with the hire as a lot of these things may already be supplied.

While some of these things may sound obvious… this list includes some of the more commonly left behind items.

  • Water – Potable for consumption and non-potable for cleaning.
  • Toilet – Bring your toilet/ensuite and toilet paper (FYI: it’s now an offence in most national parks to do your business in the bush).
  • Power source – Batteries, solar, and/or generator.
  • Cooking/heating/light source – Firewood, axe, fire lighter, portable fire pit, gas, torch (be sure to check fire regulations for your site and region).
  • Shelter – Tent, swag, gazebo, or ideally a caravan or campervan for maximum comfort.
  • Fire safety – Fire extinguisher/blanket.
  • Linen – Sleeping bags, sheets, pillows, mattresses, stretchers, bath towels, tea towels, hand towels
  • Cleaning – Cleaning chemicals and equipment.
  • Navigation – Phone charger, maps, UHF.
  • First aid – First aid kit, medication, and insect repellent.
  • Toiletries – Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and soap.
  • Protection – Sunscreen, hat, face mask, raincoat, umbrella.
  • Furniture – Camp chairs.
  • Clothing – Always bring a jumper even if you expect hot weather.
  • Kitchen items – Plates, cups, cutlery, pots, pans, utensils, cutting board, grater, foil, clingwrap, garbage bags.
  • Cooling – Esky, fridge, ice.
  • Travel essentials – Recovery gear (if off-road), wheel chocks.

Campervan and Camping Equipment Maintenance Checklist

When you pick up your campervan for hire, be sure to ask the owner where all the maintenance and breakdown equipment is located. With all the modifications done on a converted campervan, some of these items may be hidden in locations that you’re not use to.

These items will help you get unstuck in any sticky situation:

  • Spare tyre and changing equipment
  • Basic tool set, including screwdrivers, spanners, rachets, hammer, and Allen keys
  • Broom, dustpan, and brush
  • Zip ties
  • Gaffa tape
  • Shovel
  • RV jack
  • Jump starter pack or jumper leads
  • Fuel
  • Extra tent pegs and rope

Please note that our fleet comes with roadside assistance through Camplfiy, but it’s still good to be prepared if you’re a long way from home.

Camping With Pet’s Checklist

If you’re planning on bringing man’s best friend along for the ride, ensue you check your comping locations for their pet policy. Here’s some things that you don’t want to forget.

  • Portioned pet food
  • Pet treats
  • Food & water bowls
  • Favourite toy
  • Blanket
  • Bedding or spare towel
  • 6m rope/leash and ground peg
  • Brush
  • Medication
  • Vet certificates

Off-grid Camping

Most of the campervans you hire these days are off grid, which is great considering how many awesome off grid camping spots Australia has to offer.

If you are planning on gong completely off grid and not returning for a few days to a week, here’s some things to think about:

  • You’re running on solar – if the weather is not looking the best you will have to run the camper to charge the auxiliary batteries, have you brought extra fuel?
  • The location doesn’t have any potable water available; do you have enough water?
  • Will you have phone reception if you have a breakdown and how will you call for help?

It’s always better to be safe than sorry ?
